Cold Water Diver -- Distinctive Specialty
This specialty is a Distinctive
Specialty, meaning that it is taught by an instructor who has been
approved by to teach this unique, instructor-authored course.
This course helps students master knowledge and skills that are
critical to safe diving in cold water conditions, such as:
- Thermal effects on the human body
- Thermal effects on equipment
- Proper equipment requirements and prep for cold water
- Early signs and correct treatment of hypothermia
- Evaluation of conditions, and planning for problems
- Equipment concerns and issues; icing, leakage, etc.
- Dealing withimpared dexterity or control (self or buddy)
- Dealing with broken dive plans, buoyancy problems
- Proper pre- and post-dive planning & skills
- Proper breathing rates and limiting of activity
Prerequisites: Students must be at least 15 years old and hold at least a
PADI Adventure Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver certification, or equivalent.
The course consists of classroom sessions, followed by three (3) open water
dives, conducted over 1-2 days in an open-water site that provides cold water
(< 65 degrees F.) conditions.

Master Scuba Diver Trainer and IDC Staff Instructor with over 400 logged dives.
It is scheduled and run on a demand-basis -- there are no pre-scheduled class
dates.
